Personal history
Born in Swansea, Carwyn Jones was raised in Bridgend by a Welsh-speaking family. He was a pupil at Brynteg Comprehensive School in Bridgend, and then studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth,
Professional background
Carwyn trained as a barrister at the Inns of Court School of Law, London, and was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1989. He became a practising barristerand was in legal practice for ten years at Gower Chambers, Swansea. For two years, Carwyn also worked as a professional tutor at Cardiff University on the Bar Vocational Course.
Political history
Carwyn Jones was first elected to the Assembly in May 1999. In February 2000, he was appointed as Deputy Minister for Local Government, Finance and Land. He was appointed as Minister for Rural Affairs in July 2000 and in February 2002 he became Minister for Open Government, which he held until the election of 2003.
After that election, he became Minister for Environment, Planning and the Countryside, a position which he held until May 2007. Following a brief period as Education and Heritage Minister, he has held the position of Counsel General and Leader of the House.
He became First Minister and Labour Party Leader in December 2009.
