Personal history
Huw Lewis was born and brought up in the village of Aberfan. He lives in Merthyr Tydfil with his wife Lynne Neagle (Assembly Member for Torfaen) and their two children. He studied at Edinburgh University.
Professional background
Huw has served on the Welsh Labour’s policy forum and is a leading contributor to Welsh political think-tank, Wales 20:20. He has also written for the Institute of Welsh Affairs and the Bevan Foundation.
Political history
Elected as the Labour and Co-operative Party Assembly Member for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney in 1999, Huw served first as a Government Whip and then Deputy Minister for Education. After the 2007 Assembly election, he served briefly as Regeneration Minister before losing his post due to his private opposition to the formation of Labour – Plaid Cymru coalition Government.
In 2009, following Rhodri Morgan's resignation, Huw ran for the leadership of Welsh Labour. After an ultimately unsuccessful campaign, Huw returned to government - appointed Deputy Minister for Children in December by the new First Minister, Carwyn Jones.
