Additional Information

Personal history

Jenny Rathbone was born in Liverpool and now lives in Llanedeyrn in Cardiff. She has two children.

Professional background

Jenny worked for 20 years in current affairs television, including roles as a researcher and reporter for Granada’s World in Action, producer of the BBC’s Money Programme, and some time working on Women’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.

Jenny chaired Independent Review Panels of complaints for the NHS in London from 1996 to 2003.

From 2002 to 2007, Jenny was programme manager of an award-winning Sure Start programme in north London and set up two children’s centres, including a national pathfinder ante natal service offering parenting classes and breastfeeding support working alongside midwife-led clinics.

Jenny served as the lay representative on the Professional Executive Committee of Islington Primary Care Trust, working with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to improve primary care between 2002 and 2006.

Political history

Jenny has a strong interest in children’s welfare and education and is chair of a charity.

As a councillor in the London Borough of Islington 1998-2002, she focused on health, social services and education. She chaired a Camden and Islington Health Action Zone partnership board which piloted innovative projects in mental health, combating female genital mutilation, and fast-forwarding the training up of refugee doctors and nurses to be able to take up NHS posts.

This led to early appointments of a joint funded Public Health Director working across health and local authority, and the co-location of adult health and social service personnel.

Jenny is a school governor for Llanedeyrn High School and Ysgol y Berllan Deg.

Affiliations

Jenny is a member of Unite, the Co-operative Party and the Socialist Health Association and is on the National Executive of the Fabian Society.
